Nuclear UW-Madison's Mechanical Engineering Building is home to one of the campus' nuclear reactors (above), which nuclear energy researchers study to improve the safety and efficiency of current reactor technology.

Nuclear energy is an important part of the U.S.’s existing energy system, currently providing over 60 percent of the U.S.’s low carbon emission electricity. UW–Madison researchers focus on developing “next-generation” advanced nuclear reactors and technologies that improve upon the efficiency and safety of current technologies and reduce the volume of spent fuel created in generation.
