Microgrids

Microgrids Electrical grid researchers at the Wisconsin Energy Institute utilize state-of-the-art monitoring equipment (above) to study and simulate microgrids, which generate power locally and can be used to supplement the main grid in a more sophisticated manner than we do currently.

A microgrid is a small, self-contained electric-power grid with the capability to connect and disconnect seamlessly from the traditional grid. Microgrids can increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions by incorporating renewable energy sources, and enhance system reliability and stability. UW–Madison researchers focus on developing microgrid systems with even higher efficiencies, higher reliability, and an increased capacity for integrating clean energy sources.
