As use of artificial intelligence grows, so does the demand for electricity and water to power and cool hyper-scale data centers. Many utilities have proposed building additional fossil fuel power plants or keeping older ones running to meet this new demand. Meanwhile, most major computing companies have made commitments to power their operations with clean energy.

The Wisconsin Energy Institute is an ecosystem: a community of hundreds of students, scientists, faculty, and staff working on some of the world’s most pressing challenges in sustainable energy. It’s time for us to gather, to learn from each other, to reconnect, and perhaps meet a new collaborator or friend.
2025 Wisconsin KidWind Challenge: Saturday, March 1
The KidWind Challenge is a hands-on renewable energy competition that engages students in STEM. Student teams bring small-scale wind turbines or solar devices that they've designed to the Challenge where they will be tested for power output. Teams also meet with a panel of expert judges to present their design process and demonstrate their contextual knowledge and tackle instant challenge activities.
UW Science Expeditions - Open House Event
Come explore UW-Madison - your public university - and experience science on April 4-6th. Interact with researchers, visit science venues across campus, enjoy Science Spectacular Shows, and try your hand at interactive Exploration Stations. From astronomy to zoology, UW Science Expeditions is the annual campus-wide science open house that connects you to UW people & places all year round. All events are free and open to the public.
