Electricity Distribution

Electricity Distribution In the Wisconsin Energy Institute's high bay lab (above), UW–Madison electricity systems researchers run grid simulations to develop new solutions to the problems associated with an aging and outdated grid infrastructure.

Though an exceptional feat of engineering, the U.S. power grid’s infrastructure is both aging and outdated. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the grid is increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events and poorly equipped to integrate new clean energy technologies, such as wind and solar. Researchers at UW–Madison are working to modernize the power grid, giving it new resilience, efficiency, and flexibility. Our researchers also focus on the health impacts of electricity distribution and on access to electricity in developing countries.
