Improving Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems
UW–Madison associate professor of engineering James Tinjum is studying geothermal-based heating and cooling systems on the campus of healthcare software giant EPIC Systems in Verona, Wis. Working on one of the largest cooling-dominated geothermal exchange sites in North America, Tinjum is using innovative sensor technologies to measure ground temperatures around EPIC's buried wells. This data will help Tinjum and others to design and produce more energy-efficient and more cost-effective geothermal heating and cooling systems.
