Xuejun (Jun) Pan is interested in the development of biorefining processes for producing fuels, chemicals and materials from lignocellulosic biomass. Specifically, Pan is currently working on the following areas: (1) pretreatment of feedstock for cellulose ethanol production; (2) optimization and fundamental understanding of enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic substrates; (3) fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass for effective components utilization; (4) chemical conversion of biomass to liquid hydrocarbon fuels; (5) chemical saccharification of lignocellulose for producing fermentable sugars; and (6) high-value co-products development from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.
