Improving Electric Vehicles
UW–Madison's university-industry partnership, the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC) is the oldest and the largest public-private industry partnership devoted to electric machines and power electronics. In 2010, Wisconsin-based manufacturing company Orchid Monroe approached WEMPEC about sponsoring a research project to convert a gasoline truck to electric propulsion. The project now complete, the Orchid Monroe truck features more than 200 sensors wired to measure almost every aspect of the vehicle’s performance, delivering a treasure trove of data and helping UW–Madison researchers engineer the next generation of electric vehicles.
