Using Mathematical Optimization to Manage Uncertainty in the Power Grid

In this Sustainable Energy Seminar, Jim Luedtke, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, will discuss the use of optimization tools to better manage the power grid in response to the rise in variable renewable energy sources.

Abstract: I will introduce mathematical optimization as a tool for managing complex systems, and the subfield of stochastic optimization as a tool for managing systems impacted by uncertainty. I will describe these concepts in the context of an example in management of the power grid in response to uncertain inputs from renewable energy sources.
