Past, Present and Future Perspectives on the Path to Fusion Energy

Join us on September 8 at 3:30 p.m. for a Sustainable Energy Seminar presentation by Adelle Wright, Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics.

Abstract

One of the most powerful reactions in nature is the fusion of two light atoms; it is the mechanism which powers the Sun and many stars. Harnessing fusion reactions holds great promise as an innovative method for large-scale power generation. However, the challenges for realizing this energy technology are tremendous and have motivated decades of investment in science, research and technology development around the world. This talk will provide a snapshot of the current fusion energy landscape and highlight recent trends and advancements that are rapidly shifting the state of the field. This will be set in the context of the historical path to fusion, which has traced a unique path across disciplinary and geographic boundaries.
