WEI Seed Grant

This Year's Seed Grant Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the Wisconsin Energy Institute Seed Grants. You can see the project titles and their principle investigators listed below.

WEI Seed Grant: Overview

The WEI will make approximately $150,000 available for UW-Madison faculty and scientific staff-led support of cooperative research for one and two year projects (with the second year justified prior to award).  We will also provide opportunities for travel grants up to $400. We anticipate funding 3-6 projects. WEI seed grant money is available for a variety of initiatives related to energy. Funds must be used to address critical, emerging and ongoing research for issues that have an impact on carbon-neutral energy technologies and policies, including those for solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, and energy storage.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Support creative research and scholarship on campus
  • Assist faculty in developing or strengthening collaborations in new energy research areas
  • Foster innovative multidisciplinary research that integrates information, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from more than a single discipline of specialized knowledge
  • Provide insurance against research proposals submitted for extramural funding, particularly those involving support for graduate students

To be eligible, each project must clearly identify the benefits to expanding energy research at UW-Madison in the specific topical area, have at least one faculty member involved and have a plan that expends the awarded annual funds within the current fiscal year (funds available expire annually).

The WEI Executive Committee, in concert with other WEI faculty, will review all proposals and base the award of funds on the criteria above. The review process will be similar to the approach utilized by the Graduate School for its Research competition.
