Nuclear fuels meeting brings top experts to Madison

Less than a week after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill lifting Wisconsin’s decades long moratorium on new nuclear power plants, a group of the nation’s top nuclear fuel scientists descended on UW-Madison to discuss advanced technologies that they hope will contribute to a clean energy future.

The Advanced Fuels Campaign’s biannual information-exchange meeting for nuclear fuel technology research was held April 5-7, 2016. It brought researchers and government officials together from industry, research universities, the U.S. Department of Energy and the nation’s network of national laboratories to coordinate efforts for making the nation’s current nuclear power plants more efficient and safer. They also updated each other on efforts to develop entirely new nuclear fuels and emphasized the many opportunities for students in nuclear engineering research and development.
