Job Description: 

The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) is one of three Department of Energy Bioenergy Research Centers conducting fundamental, genomics-based research on microbial and plant systems required to realize the national need for low-cost biofuels. GLBRC represents a multidisciplinary partnership with expertise spanning the physical and biological sciences, including genomics, microbial and plant biology, analytical chemistry, computational biology and bioinformatics, and engineering.

We seek two highly motivated student hourly programmers to participate in design and development of in-house data repositories and custom software.

Required knowledge, skills and experience:

    • Linux and Windows OS
    • Programming experience with multiple languages
    • Demonstrated ability to clearly document code
    • Ability to work 14 to 20 hours most weeks, at least half during “normal business hours”

Beneficial skills and experience:

    • R
    • Ruby on Rails
    • Some knowledge of statistics, data mining or data visualization techniques
    • Some knowledge of molecular biology or bioinformatics
    • Object Oriented Programming (CS 302 or equivalent experience in Ruby, Java, C++, Python, or similar modern language)
    • Data Structures (CS 367 or equivalent)
    • Familiarity with HTML, CSS and Java Script
    • Web application development
    • Relational database principles
    • Comfortable with SQL
    • Version control system (e.g., Subversion)
    • Agile development methods

Pay rate:

$10.00 to $12.50 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
