Ouweneel-Bascom Professor, Mechanical Engineering
Sanford Klein is the Bascom Ouweneel Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of the Solar Energy Laboratory at University of Wisconsin – Madison. Klein’s current research interests are in applications of thermodynamics and heat transfer with specific focus on refrigeration and solar energy applications. His specific research focus at this time is on developing detailed models of solar thermal electric and photovoltaic energy systems. In addition, he is actively involved in the development of engineering computer tools for both instruction and research. He is the primary author of the solar energy system program, TRNSYS, and the general engineering equation solving program, EES. Klein is a Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Solar Energy Society (ASES).
