Francesco Volpe's research is in the area of magnetic confinement fusion and has two main aims. The first is to help developing stable, steady-state "high performance" fusion plasmas. This is achieved by suppressing or preventing magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities that limit the plasma pressure or terminate the plasma discharge. The second activity focuses on coupling electrostatic waves that can only exist in dense plasmas with electromagnetic waves that can be launched from an external antenna.
