Historically, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has created innovative responses to challenges facing Wisconsin, the nation and the world. In recent years, these challenges have related largely to energy security and the environment. Across campus, agronomists, biochemists, engineers, geneticists and economists are working to form solutions to these important challenges. The Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative exists to cultivate these solutions and grow bioenergy expertise throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest.

Since 2007, the WBI has sought to create, commercialize and promote bio-based solutions. In 2011, the WBI continued in its mission by facilitating eight faculty members in their research to investigate the critical issues of developing a renewable energy economy. WBI researchers are taking unique and diverse approaches to address these concerns. From developing novel ways of accessing and converting plant sugars to determining the effects of bioenergy systems on the world around us, their research reflects great opportunity and promise.
